CHAPTER 14
Amber stood back stage, behind a screen, in total darkness, waiting. The other contestants milled around her nervously. No one was talking, they were barely breathing, and it was all Amber could do not to throw up all over the floor. She could hear the massive audience out in the theater talking and laughing and shuffling their feet as they waited for the show to start. The lights in the theater suddenly flashed three times and the audience became still almost immediately. Amber held her breath.

The Decision Point intro music started. Several spotlights in different colors began zipping madly around the audience, whipping them into a frenzy. An applause light, out of sight of the cameras but in full view of the studio audience began to flash. On cue, the audience began to cheer.
A spotlight came up on Bill Hammer, the announcer, who was standing stage left. He boomed, âLive from Los Angeles, California, the two-hour Season Eleven Premiere of Americaâs favorite show, Deeecision Poooint!â
The audience roared with excitement and a good-looking man in an edgy suit and tie walked to center stage. âAnd hereâs your host, Brian Zuma!â Bill shouted. The audience exploded as Brian smiled and waved and basked in their adoration. Finally, he said, âHi, Iâm Brian Zuma, and this is Decision Point!â
A bright light went on behind a screen and the eight contestants appeared in silhouette. They began waving madly, like they had been instructed, all except Clarence who began to stomp. The audience was now on its feet, whistling and hooting. The light behind the contestants blinked out and they disappeared. The applause light now said, âgroan,â and the audience groaned dutifully.
âSoon, America,â Brian said, playfully wagging his finger at the camera, âsoon youâll meet our eight contestants and learn all the details on their terrible tragedies for the first time. Their sad, sad stories that will touch you, make you cry and hopefully, make you care enough to vote for your favorite!â
The audience whooped again. âYes, America, you get to decide which contestants are the most deserving of this completely unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But first, letâs meet our panel of experts.â A spotlight swung into the audience where a judges table sat in place of the center front rows. Two women and a man sat facing the stage. Behind them, in the choice âcamera timeâ seats, sat the best dressed, most beautiful, and coolest audience members.
âPlease give a warm, Decision Point welcome to Doctor Deirdre Vagmund, grief counselor and psychology professor at Williams University.â
Dr. Vagmund was exquisite. Her long dark hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, and her glasses made her look like a hipster. She was dressed all in white and her makeup was flawless. She gave a girlish wave to the camera.
âJoseph P. Milner, best-selling author of Killer Instinct,â Brian continued. Joseph was a small man, with graying hair and hard, mean eyes. He smiled a tight little smile and held up a copy of his book, pointing to it with his other hand.
